GAP
"I created Gap with a simple idea: to make it easier to find a pair of jeans. We remain committed to that basic principle."
This quote by Don Fisher, Gap, Inc. Founder and Chairman Emeritus still holds true today, although the brand has extended far beyond their 1969 beginning. Since 1969, customers have looked to Gap for updated, casual clothing and accessories that help them express their own personal sense of style. Today, Gap continues to be the best destination for wardrobe essentials such as T-shirts, hoodies, great-fitting pants and denim. What began as one brand has grown to include Gap, GapKids, babyGap, GapMaternity and gapbody. And, Gap, Inc. also owns Piperline, Old Navy, Athleta and Banana Republic.
Despite its publicly-traded status, the Fisher family remains deeply involved in Gap Inc.'s business. Donald Fisher served as Chairman of the Board until 2004; when he stepped down, he was succeeded by his son, Robert J. Fisher. Both Donald and Doris Fisher remain on Gap Inc.'s Board of directors, and the Fisher family collectively owns a significant portion of the company's stock.
Life Facts:
Today, Gap Inc. is one of the world's largest specialty retailers, with more than 3,100 stores and fiscal 2008 revenues of $14.5 billion.
