If you could bring back one era or trend, what would it be?

SH: I REALLY LOVE THE TWENTIES, THE THIRTIES, AND THE FORTIES.

What are some pieces in your own closet that you would never throw out and why?

SH: SO MANY LITTLE VINTAGE NUMBERS, YOU KNOW. I LIKE THINGS THAT HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF PADDING, LIKE OLD VINTAGE CHLOE. IT’S NOT REALLY DESIGNER SPECIFIC, BUT THERE’S GOT TO BE SOME ROMANCE TO IT. IT’S GOT TO LOOK LIKE SOMEBODY WROTE A POEM IN IT.

Favorite sneakers?

SH: JUST MY CHUCK TAYLORS.

Favorite Jeans?

SH: I REALLY LIKE IMITATION OF CHRIST JEANS RIGHT NOW. THEY HAVE A REALLY GREAT FIT FOR ME. I’M VERY HAPPY WITH THE HIGH WAISTED THING. BEING SIX FEET TALL THE LOW WAISTED THING WAS ALWAYS EXTRA LONG. NOT SO CUTE.

How long do you keep clothes and how do you get rid of them?

SH: VINTAGE PIECES ARE ALWAYS GREAT BECAUSE THEY ARE TIMELESS. THE THING I LIKE TO DO WHEN I’M EDITING MY CLOSET, BECAUSE I’VE MOVED AROUND A LOT, I’LL PUT STUFF IN A BOX. IF I DON’T MISS IT OR I DON’T GO TO IT FOR A COUPLE MONTHS, IF IT’S IN THE SAME SEASON, I GET RID OF IT. WHEN IN NEW YORK, I LIKE TAKING THE DISCARDS TO THE PLACE ON SEVENTEENTH STREET THAT DOES THE HOSPICE FOR AIDS PATIENTS, HOUSING WORKS. I GO THERE A LOT.
