AO: I LOVE COURREGES, JUNYA WATANABE. I DON’T LIKE WEARING THINGS THAT YOU SEE EVERYWHERE, LIKE GUCCI, PRADA. I DON’T MIND JUNYA BECAUSE IT IS ART. YOU COULD WEAR IT AT ANY AGE AND IT’S SEXY.
WHEN I WAS LITTLE I WAS VERY SHY. MY MOTHER USED TO DRESS ME IN HATS AND GLOVES. SHE DID WITH MY SISTERS TOO BUT THEY DIDN’T CARE AS MUCH. WE WERE LIVING IN CASABLANCA, MOROCCO. I DIDN’T TALK TO PEOPLE. THEY DIDN’T TALK TO ME EITHER, BUT THEY LOOKED. CLOTHES BECAME A WAY FOR ME TO EXPRESS MYSELF.

What do you want to change about your closet?

AO: THE DRAWERS WITH UNDERWEAR SOCKS. I PUT THEM IN WHEN I MOVED HERE BUT I NEVER KNOW WHAT IS INSIDE OF THEM. NOW, I’M EDITING. I GO IN EVERY WEEK. I GIVE THINGS TO MY NIECES.

What about the hats?

AO: I DON’T CARE WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE I JUST WANT TO BE WARM.

SHE PULLS OUT AN ISSEY MIYAKE IVORY SKULLCAP WITH PORCUPINE NEEDLES STICKING OUT ALL OVER IT.
AO: LOU REED BOUGHT THIS FOR ME AND I LOVE IT! BESIDES MY MOTHER, LOU IS THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT I LIKE. WE GO SHOPPING ALL THE TIME, AND HE’S THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKES JUNYA AND WEARS IT, LIKE ME. HE AND LAURIE ANDERSON BOUGHT ME THIS ISSEY MIYAKE BAG. IT LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE PERSON!

What is most precious in your closet?

AO: MY MOTHER HAD THESE COATS MADE IN PARIS BY MADELEINE DE RAUCH, VERY FORTIES FIFTIES STYLE. I GOT THIS OTHER ONE FROM “O MISTRESS MINE,” THE EAST VILLAGE VINTAGE STORE. I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE IT REMINDED ME OF MY MOTHER’S COATS.

You seem to have a dual personality, rock n’roll and ladylike fifties?

YES, I LIKE ALL THE MARC BY MARC JACOBS JACKETS BECAUSE THEY LOOK JACKIE O. AND THEN I HAVE LEATHER PIECES, ARCHITECTURAL. I WEAR THE JUNYA WITH PLATFORMS, BIBA, MIU MIU. MIU MIU SHOES ARE THE BEST.

How did rock n’roll influence your style?

AO: WHEN I CAME TO NEW YORK IN THE EIGHTIES, I BOUGHT A LOT OF BETSY JOHNSON, NORMA KAMALI. AND I WORE A LOT OF LEATHER, NOT RAMONES LEATHER, BUT ALAIA, GAULTIER. I STILL LIKE LEATHER JACKETS BUT NOT LEATHER PANTS ANYMORE.
