What do you like about J. Mendel?

NR: I THINK HE MAKES BEAUTIFUL CLOTHES. THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING IN THE DETAIL THAT MAKES IT ORIGINAL AND EXQUISITE. HE USES A LOT OF DELICATE FABRICS LIKE CHIFFON THAT WORKS WELL ON ME.

What are some pieces in your own closet that you would never throw out and why?

NR: THERE ARE LOTS OF THINGS. I HAVE A PRADA COAT WITH ME THAT I BOUGHT FIVE YEARS OR SIX YEARS AGO, AND I THOUGHT THIS IS HUGELY EXPENSIVE SHOULD I DO THIS? BUT IT’S BEEN PERFECT EVER SINCE. IT’S A BLACK COAT WITH A FUR LINING. IT’S JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT YOU JUST THINK… THAT WAS A REALLY GOOD INVESTMENT.

How about shoes that you would never give away?

NR: THESE SIGERSON MORRISON BOOTS ARE MY FAVORITES. I’VE GOT A GREAT PEER OF GOLD MUI MUI SHOES THAT I LOVE, HEELS, AND ALSO CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN.

What was your biggest fashion faux pas?

NR: I’VE HAD MAJOR ONES IN MY TIME, MAJOR! IT DOESN’T GET WORSE THAN THIS: I WAS A STUDENT GOING TO WORK AS A RUNNER ON A MOVIE OF MY DAD’S IN EL PASO TEXAS. I ARRIVED WEARING A BLACK AND WHITE DRESS, A BLACK AND WHITE COAT, A WHITE PICTURE BOX HAT, AND A BLACK AND WHITE HANDBAG AND HIGH HEELS. HOW DREADFUL IS THAT? I MUST HAVE THOUGHT THAT I LOOKED DEEPLY GLAMOROUS. I WAS SEVENTEEN.
AND THEN THERE ARE THINGS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, A TEE SHIRT WHEN IT WEARS OUT, OR FAVORITE WORK OUT PANTS. FOR ME, IT’S JUST A WHITE TEE SHIRT FROM URBAN OUTFITTERS. IT’S REALLY THIN. I LIKE THIN FABRIC. MY MOST FAVORITES ARE ASPREY MEN’S V-NECK CASHMERE SWEATERS, BIG ONES. I JUST GOT A BUNCH OF THOSE, AND THEY JUST FEEL REALLY COZY.

Does your husband wear them?

NR: NO. I JUST BOUGHT THEM FOR MYSELF AND I JUST KEEP ADDING TO THE COLLECTION.

What is rule for getting rid of things in your closet?

NR: SOMEBODY JUST CAME OVER AND DID THAT QUITE RECENTLY WITH ME AND I REGRET HALF OF THE THINGS I GAVE AWAY. SOME THINGS I JUST LIKE LOOKING AT. I HAD A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF LITTLE SILK PETTICOATS. SHE SAID, “HOW OFTEN DO YOU WEAR THEM?” AND I SAID “VIRTUALLY, NEVER.” AND I THREW THEM ALL AWAY, GAVE THEM TO CHARITY. I DO LIKE THAT KIND OF SHOPPING IN YOUR CLOSET THING, THAT YOU CAN FIND A JACKET THAT MAYBE AT THE TIME YOU THINK WAS A BIG MISTAKE, AND YOU SUDDENLY THROW IT TOGETHER WITH SOMETHING ELSE YEARS LATER, AND IT LOOKS COOL.
