VINTAGE ARTICLE!! Cynthia Nixon, Mary-Louise Parker

C
ynthia Nixon has been acting since she was young and is one of the more successful child stars working today. At 9 years old she appeared on a TV show her mother was working on called “To Tell the Truth”. She really started in the business though at 12 years old in After School Specials and made her Broadway and silver screen debut at age of 14 in the Lincoln Center revival of “The Philadelphia Story” and the movie “Little Darlings”. Later on, Nixon graduated from Hunter High School and went on to study English Literature at Barnard. Her freshman year she also performed in two Broadway plays simultaneously; “The Real Thing” and “Hurlyburly” both directed by renowned director Mike Nichols. She continued to have a steady career in films, television and on stage for many years appearing in productions like “Amadeus”, “The Manhattan Project”, “Addams Family Values”, “Marvin’s Room”, “Nash Bridges”, “The Heidi Chronicles” and “Indiscretions” to name a few. Nixon didn’t seem to be hitting it big until 199, when she was cast as Miranda on “Sex and the City”. For six years she portrayed the conservatively dressed, red-headed lawyer, even receiving a Supporting Actress Emmy. In 2006, two years after “Sex and the City” ended; Nixon went back to The Great White Way for her Tony winning performance in David Lindsay-Abaire’s new play “Rabbit Hole”. Over the years she has continued to take roles in movies like “Babysitters”, “An Englishman in New York”, “Sex and the City” and “Rampart”. She appeared as a recurring character on HBO’s “Nurse Jackie” and like most New York actors completed the Law and Order trilogy by appearing in the original “Law and Order” and its spin-offs SVU and CI. Not one to stay away from the stage in 2012, she starred in the revival of Wit, shaving her head for her portrayal as a cancer patient; something that was close to her heart after her own struggles with breast cancer.

Mary-Louise Parker was born in Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 1964. Since her father was a judge who served in the US Army she moved from town to town and lived in states like Tennessee and Texas. Parker majored in Drama at the University of North Carolina School for the Arts and after graduation moved to New York City to begin her stage career. Parker got her start in the business on the soap opera “Ryan’s Hope” and soon after she started receiving miner roles in regional theatre productions in Buffalo, Syracuse and Hartford. Then in 1990 she made her Broadway debut in the production of “Prelude to a Kiss”, receiving her first Tony nomination and winning the Clarence Derwent award for her portrayal of the lead female Rita. For the rest of the 90s she continued to have a strong presence in the New York theatre community in plays “Bus Stop” and “How I Learned to Drive”. All the while Parker graced the big screen in movies like “Longtime Companion”, “The Client”, “Bullets over Broadway” and “Boys on the Side”. In 2000 she starred in the Broadway hit “Proof”, winning a Tony for her stellar performance. Next Parker starred with the likes of Meryl Streep and Al Pacino in HBO’s mini-series of the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same name “Angels In America” portraying Harper Pitt, the drug addled Mormon housewife. Again, she gave a brilliant performance and was awarded both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Mary-Louise then began her recurring run on the NBC political drama “The West Wing” and soon after got the starring role in Showtime’s comedy about a pot dealing suburban mom in “Weeds”. Throughout the 8 seasons on “Weeds” she continued to take on roles in movies and made for TV movies like “Saved”, “Miracle Run”, “The Robber Bride”, “The Spiderwick Chronicles” and “Red”. While she has had a great run in TV and movies, Parker has gone back to Broadway and will be seen in the period piece “The Snow Geese” starting October 24th 2013.
