You’ve done so many closets, from celebrities to executives. People fall into categories?

LR: A TOSSER EITHER CAN’T MAKE UP HER MIND WHAT TO WEAR OR HE OR SHE DOESN’T TAKE TIME. THEY CAN BE UNORGANIZED, MOSTLY CREATIVE PEOPLE AND ARTISTS, NOT LINEAR THINKERS. THEY LIKE CHAOS.

STUFFERS ARE PEOPLE WHO KEEP EVERYTHING, ALL HANGING ON SHELVES. THEY DON’T WANT TO GET RID OF ANYTHING. ONE GUY COMES TO MIND WHO WAS IN PUBLIC RELATIONS. I DIVIDED HIS CLOSET INTO TWO: ONE FOR JUST WORK CLOTHES, THE OTHER FOR PLAY CLOTHES. FOR STUFFERS IT’S ABOUT VOLUME. A MAXIMALIST WILL KEEP LOTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS ALL THE TIME, WHEREAS A MINIMALIST WILL KEEP A FEW GOOD THINGS.

What’s your hanger philosophy with Sari?

LR: SHE HAD ALL DIFFERENT HANGERS. I GOT BASIC PLASTIC ONES, SO THAT THE CLOTHES ALL HANG THE SAME HEIGHT. I’VE USED CLIP TROUSER HANGERS IN THE PAST TO HANG PANTS LONG. BUT SHE NEEDS SHORTER HANGING, SINCE THERE’S PART OF THE CLOSET WALL THAT KICKS OUT AT THE BOTTOM.
MOST OF HER CLOTHES ARE LONG. SHE WEARS A LOT OF DRESSES. IF YOU HAVE THINGS ON DIFFERENT HANGERS, THEY STICK OUT IN DIFFERENT PLACES.

What about arranging by color?

LR: SHE HAS A LOT OF BLACK. I USUALLY PLACE THE LIGHTS IN FIRST. SHE DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB OF NARROWING DOWN HER PERSONAL WARDROBE.

Why place a throw rug on the floor? Does it matter?

LR: THE FLOOR NEEDS HELP. WITH ALL OF THIS WORK TO MAKE THE CLOSET FUNCTIONAL IT SHOULD ALSO LOOK NICE.

You’ve hung pegboard. How does that work?

LR: I THOUGHT OF THINGS SHE COULD TOSS ON TO THE PEGS: BAGS, SCARVES, HATS. INSTEAD OF CONTAINERS, THIS WAY SHE CAN SEE WHAT’S ON THE PEGS. THERE ARE FIVE `S’ HOOKS TO PLACE THINGS, NEW PURCHASES.
