GJ: DRESSES ARE EVERY DAY WEAR, EIGHTY PERCENT VINTAGE. THE VICTORIAN, I WEAR ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK, IF I GO TO THE DELI AND HAVE TO THROW SOMETHING ON REALLY FAST. I GOT IT AT THE CHELSEA FLEA MARKET. THE FLORAL DRESS IS FOR DINNER WITH FRIENDS, DINNER AT AUGUST IN NEW YORK, LUNCH AT BROWN’S ON WEEKENDS.
WHEN I DON’T WANT TO LOOK TOO DRESSED UP, I WEAR THESE GLADIATOR SANDALS, $69, FROM NINE WEST. I ALWAYS WEAR FLATS UNLESS I GO ‘OUT OUT!’ FOR ME THAT MEANS SOME PROMOTIONAL ART/FASHION THING. I BELIEVE IN THE `WHEN IN ROME.’ I WOULDN’T SHOW UP IN RATTY TEES, BUT I COLLECT RATTY TEES.

You’ve got tons of dresses. The Peter Max print dress is interesting.

GJ: THAT’S A COLLECTIBLE FROM THE SEVENTIES, FROM RESURRECTION VINTAGE. I HAVEN’T EVEN WORN IT YET. I’D PAIR IT WITH ALAIA HEELS. I’M DEFINITELY A DRESS PERSON, NOT BECAUSE I’M FEMININE OR GIRLY. I HAVE NO BOOBS. I’M NATURALLY MUSCULAR. DRESSES ARE EASY TO PUT ON.

Those fringe boots are amazing!

GJ: THEY’RE VINTAGE KAMALI. THEY DANCE WHEN YOU ARE WALKING. I USUALLY JUST WEAR THEM WITH JEANS AND A TEE SHIRT…MY NAVY BLUE AMERICAN APPAREL TUNIC.

Favorite jeans?

GJ: SUPERFINE. I LIKE THAT THEY ARE HIGH WAISTED, ELONGATE THE LEG WITH FLAT SHOES. I’M NOT HOLLOW. THERE’S A LITTLE BOOTY BACK THERE.

How do you decide what to keep and what to trash from your closet?

GJ: I THROW AWAY THINGS FROM NINE WEST AND OLD NAVY. I’M NOT AN IMPULSE SHOPPER. WHEN I WEAR SOMETHING ENOUGH TIMES, I LIKE TO GIVE IT A REST. MY FRIENDS AND I EXCHANGE WHAT WE DON’T WANT.

How often do you put things in storage, to update your closet by season, taste?

GJ: I HAVE A 5 BY 7” CLOSET THAT I UPDATE A COUPLE TIMES A YEAR. I PULLED OUT THIS REALLY LONG 60’S DRESS WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEADWORK, RHINESTONES, A CRèME COLOR. I WENT TO THE CHRISTIAN DIOR RESORT SHOW AND THIS VINTAGE DRESS FROM MY STORAGE RESEMBLES THAT. I GOT IT IN NEW ORLEANS.

The Met Costume Institute is featuring Poiret, an iconic designer from the turn of the 20th Century. Is it true you have an original?

GJ: I FOUND IT AT THE GARAGE FLEA MARKET ON 26TH STREET FOR $80! I HAD TO GET IT CLEANED AND FIXED.
